Shooting the Moon by Frances O'Roark Dowell

Jamie Dexter and her brother TJ are Army brats - their dad is a colonel and in charge of the base in Fort Hood, Texas. This novel takes place during the Vietnam War and although both Jamie and TJ have always played "army men", when TJ decides to enlist as a medic and delay college, the family is in turmoil. Jamie who has always believed in the "Army way" begins to reconsider things after her brother sends home roll after roll of film from Vietnam for her to develop.
This is a very quick read and is beautifully written. I couldn't believe how caught up in the story I became and read this book in one sitting. I think both boys and girls will really like this very thought-provoking novel.
