Shutout by Brendan Halpin

Amanda and Lena are best friends and both are great at soccer. Prior to freshman year, both try out for the varsity soccer team but only Lena makes it. This changes everything. Suddenly Lena becomes friends with the upper-classmen on the soccer team, gets a boyfriend, and becomes wildly popular. Along with her new popularity, Lena makes some bad choices like drinking and partying.

Shutout is a novel about friendship, growing up, and realizing that actions have consequences. Brendan Halpin is a great author. I read an adult book by him a few years ago and was so happy to see that he is now writing for a teenage audience.

This is a well-written, funny, and realistic look at what life is like at fifteen. Highly recommended!

  1. I'll have to recommend this to a friend whose daughter plays soccer. And read it myself, of course!
