A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness inspired by Siobhan Down

"The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do.
Conor was awake when it came."

Conor sees the monster almost every night. It comes from the yew tree in Conor's back yard. The monster is very large, very scary, and tells Conor scary stories throughout the night.

But Conor isn't  scared. He has too many things going on in his life to be scared of this monster, who, after all, is really only a nightmare. Or is it?

Although this book seems like it might be really scary and creepy, it isn't scary in the way readers might think after seeing the cover and hearing a little about this book. A Monster Calls is scary in an entirely different way - it's more like real life - with all the heartbreak and sorrow life can sometimes bring. This book is beautifully written and has intriguing illustrations to accompany the text.

Told in surprisingly simple language, you will remember this book for a long time.
