Almost Home by Joan Bauer

Sugar Mae Cole and her mother Reba move to Chicago to get a new start. Her mother was promised a lead to a new job and a place to stay once they relocated, but when they call her mother's friend, the phone has been disconnected and they have no where to go and no place to stay; they are homeless.

Reba shuts down and lands in the hospital, but it's a little more complicated for Sugar because she has a dog she rescued and won't leave behind.

If you have a soft-spot for dogs, and love to root for the underdog, you will love this story. Bauer tells the story of Sugar and Shush (the dog) beautifully. This is a heart-warming story: Sugar and Shush may be beaten down by life but they are far from giving up. Sugar Mae Cole is a character you won't soon forget!

  1. I agree that it is much more Sugar Mae's story, but as a dog lover, I fell in love with Shush also!
