Now Is The Time for Running by Michael Williams

This Nutmeg nominee for 2013 is fast-paced, exciting, and very, very moving.  This novel is a about two brothers who experience political uprising and when their family is killed must leave Zimbabwe. They must become refugees and make their way to South Africa where they experience violence and hatred towards immigrants.

Once you begin this book, you will not be able to put it down. Deo is a character readers will care deeply about. His love and expertise in soccer, and the dangers Deo and his brother face on the way to South Africa will keep both middle school boys and girls engaged. Although this is fiction, the saddest thing is their struggles are really happening to some children in Africa today.

This book is disturbing and somewhat graphic but very appropriate for middle school readers. Now Is The Time For Running is really worth reading!
